About the Journal
A review of the records and chronicles related to Umbral allows us to trace its origins back to 1983, when it began as an informative bulletin developed by the Board of Directors. Although the historical annals do not explicitly state it, we can maintain the hypothesis that, since its inception, its purpose has been to strengthen the study and teaching of humanities, philosophy, science, and the arts within the collegiate community. Furthermore, it has consistently aimed to contribute to the progress of Costa Rican education and culture, in alignment with the corporate objectives of Colypro.
The year 2023 marked a memorable milestone as Umbral reached its 40th anniversary of continuous contribution to the dissemination of knowledge, the promotion of debate and reflection, and the encouragement of creative and educational endeavors. This legacy has been built through the contributions of its own members via research articles, academic essays, biographical sketches, bibliographic studies, short stories, poems, and other works related to the humanities, philosophy, science, and the arts.
With the publication of volume 48-2-2023, Umbral concluded its era as a print publication. Echoing the etymological meaning of its name—the first and principal step—starting with volume 49-1-2024, the journal takes its first step in its historical evolution by entering the world of digital publishing. This transition strengthens its competitive advantages in terms of accessibility, cost, real-time updates, interactivity, and indexing.
Moving forward, Umbral continues its mission: "To promote and drive the academic and scientific study of humanities, philosophy, science, and the arts, as well as the teaching thereof." This remains in full harmony with corporate goals, seeking to "stimulate the highest sentiments of prestige, solidarity, and professional, cultural, and spiritual well-being" (Fernández, 1983: Umbral Journal Editorial 2, p.2).
